A Simpler, Cheaper ServiceM8 Alternative for Solo Mowers

ServiceM8 is the entrenched Australian tradie tool: quotes, invoices, payments, priced by job volume and built iOS-first. Here is what it costs a one-person mowing round, what it does that Mowbius doesn't, and who should switch.

Prices and platform facts verified August 2026. Software pricing changes often — check ServiceM8's own pricing page before you decide.

Stay on ServiceM8 if you quote and invoice from an iPhone, take card payments on site, and your monthly job count fits a tier you're happy to pay for.

Switch to Mowbius if you work from an Android phone, create more jobs a month than the cheap tiers allow, bill outside your scheduling app, and want one flat price with no job counter.

What ServiceM8 Is, and Who It’s Really For

ServiceM8 is Australian job management software for trades: job cards, scheduling, quotes, invoices, card payments, electronic forms, and staff tracking, sold to plumbers, electricians, cleaners, and garden and lawn businesses alike. It is deeply established in the Australian market, and its own pricing page says the businesses using it manage over $50 billion in jobs.

Two design decisions shape how it feels for a mower. The first is that it is built iOS-first. ServiceM8’s own FAQ says the full-featured app is optimized for iPhone and iPad, and offers Android users a separate, narrower app called ServiceM8 Lite, described in that FAQ as “designed for technicians, subcontractors, and temporary workers who need core job management features without the need for an iPhone.” ServiceM8 also runs a standing offer to help businesses move field staff onto iPhones.

The second is that it charges by job volume rather than by seat. Users are unlimited from the Starter plan upward. What you pay for is how many new jobs you create each month, which is an unusual and mostly fair model for a trade that quotes big and works small. For a mowing round, where the work is many small repeat visits rather than a few large jobs, that model runs the other way.

ServiceM8’s Pricing in 2026

Prices verified in August 2026 on ServiceM8’s Australian pricing page, which states that prices are in Australian dollars and include GST.

  • Free, A$0 a month. One user, 30 new jobs a month, 10 AI uses a day, SMS at 10 cents each, card payments at 2.10% plus 30 cents.
  • Starter, A$29 a month. Unlimited users, 50 jobs a month, 100 or more included SMS, cards at 1.85% plus 30 cents. Adds partial and progress invoices and supplier invoice importing.
  • Growing, A$79 a month. 150 jobs a month, 300 or more SMS, cards at 1.65% plus 30 cents. Adds asset management, forms and certificates, proposals, and the ServiceM8 Inbox.
  • Premium, A$149 a month. 500 jobs a month, 1,000 or more SMS, cards at 1.49% plus 30 cents. Adds job costing and markup billing.
  • Premium Plus, A$349 a month. 1,500 or more jobs a month, with additional jobs at 20 cents each.
  • Trial. 14 days free on the paid plans.

The free plan is genuinely free and genuinely useful, which is more than most of this category offers. The question for a mower is the counter attached to it.

Where ServiceM8 Frustrates Solo Mowers

Three frictions, all of them structural rather than faults. Two come straight from ServiceM8’s own documentation.

  • The job counter, against a mowing round. ServiceM8 counts new jobs created each month. A solo doing three lawns a day, five days a week, is around 60 job cards a month, past the free plan’s 30 and past Starter’s 50. That puts a one-person round on the A$79 Growing plan while a plumber doing four large jobs a week sits comfortably on Starter. How it lands for you depends on whether every visit gets its own job card or a customer’s season sits on one, so check your own pattern against the caps before assuming a tier.
  • Android is deliberately a second tier. This is ServiceM8’s stated design, not an accusation: the full app is for iPhone and iPad, and Android gets ServiceM8 Lite. Reviewers covering the Australian tradie market repeat the same advice, that businesses whose field devices are Android phones should look elsewhere.
  • Breadth you will not use. Asset management, certificates, proposals, markup billing, dispatch maps, and staff GPS are the reasons plumbing and electrical firms love it. For one person mowing lawns, most of it is scenery you scroll past. Third-party reviewers otherwise positive on the product note that per-job pricing starts to feel expensive in busy months, and for a mowing business the busy months are the season.

What ServiceM8 Does Better Than Mowbius

The concession list here is long, and worth reading before you switch anything:

  • Quotes with online acceptance, quote options, and electronic signature
  • Invoicing, including partial and progress invoices
  • Card payments on site, Tap to Pay on iPhone, and online invoice payment links
  • Accounting integrations, which is how GST reaches a proper tax invoice
  • Automated customer messaging: booking confirmations, reminders, on-the-way SMS, and payment follow-ups
  • Auto routing, a dispatch map, and staff GPS
  • Unlimited users, an online dashboard, and a desktop app for Mac and PC
  • Electronic forms, certificates, proposals, job costing, and markup billing
  • A real free plan, which Mowbius does not have

One more, in fairness: ServiceM8 is not a web-only product that falls over in a dead zone. Its own pricing page lists offline access, saying the app works without internet connectivity and syncs updates when you are back in range. Offline is a genuine dividing line against most of this category, and it is not much of one here.

Mowbius has no quoting, no invoicing, no payments, no GST, no accounting sync, no customer messaging, no routing, no web app, no multi-user, and no data export. If any line above is how you run the business, stay where you are.

Where Mowbius Wins

  • Price, once the season starts. $12.99 a month or $59.99 a year, flat, with unlimited contacts and unlimited jobs and no counter attached to either. Against Growing at A$79 a month, that is the number that matters, and it does not move when you get busy.
  • Android and iOS treated the same. Mowbius is one native app shipped to both stores, with the same features on each. There is no Lite version and no suggestion that you buy a different phone.
  • Built around mowing, not around trades. Contacts carry color labels and an “Automatically Reschedule Jobs” setting for recurring visits. Jobs are built from a reusable task and price catalog through “Manage Tasks & Prices”. The Schedule tab has a calendar plus “Daily View” and “Weekly View”, and the Revenue tab shows “Today’s Revenue”, “Unpaid Payments”, “View All Payments”, and a “Forecast” report.
  • Everything on the phone. Your data lives on the device rather than in a cached window of it, so you can add customers and close jobs anywhere and the app syncs the next time it connects.
  • Nothing to set up or administer. No SMS credits, no invoice templates, no accounting connection, no ads, no sign-up fee. Install it, add your customers, mow.

How to Switch

ServiceM8 is billed monthly with no published contract, and if you are on the free plan there is nothing to cancel at all. Before you close the account, check what ServiceM8 offers for exporting your client list and job history: we have not verified the available formats from the outside, and a copy of your own records is worth having whatever you switch to.

Moving into Mowbius means re-entering customers and properties by hand, because there is no import. An afternoon covers a typical solo round. Add the customer, set the recurring schedule once, and auto-rescheduling fills the weeks ahead.

The Mowbius trial runs 14 days with every feature unlocked, and the subscription is billed by the App Store or Google Play, cancelable anytime in your store settings. If you want the wider Australian picture first, the roundup of lawn care apps in Australia covers the local options, and the Sortscape comparison covers the other Australian tool built specifically for mowing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does ServiceM8 cost in Australia?

Verified in August 2026 on ServiceM8's Australian pricing page, which states that prices are in Australian dollars and include GST. The Free plan is A$0 a month for one user and 30 new jobs a month. Starter is A$29 a month for 50 jobs, Growing is A$79 for 150 jobs, Premium is A$149 for 500 jobs, and Premium Plus is A$349 for 1,500 or more jobs with extra jobs at 20 cents each. Users are unlimited from Starter up, and the paid plans come with a 14-day free trial. Mowbius is $12.99 a month or $59.99 a year with no job limit, charged in Australian dollars by the App Store or Google Play.

Does ServiceM8 work on Android?

Partly, and ServiceM8 says so itself. Its own FAQ explains that the full-featured app is built for iPhone and iPad, and that Android users get a separate app called ServiceM8 Lite, which it describes as designed for technicians, subcontractors, and temporary workers who need core job management features without an iPhone. ServiceM8 also runs an offer encouraging businesses to move their field staff onto iPhones. Mowbius ships the same native app on iOS and Android, with no feature difference between them.

Does ServiceM8 work offline?

Yes. ServiceM8's own pricing page lists offline access as a feature, saying the app can be used without internet connectivity and that updates sync when you are back in range. Offline is therefore not a point of difference between ServiceM8 and Mowbius the way it is against most web-first platforms in this category. Mowbius is also offline-first, with contacts, properties, jobs, and the schedule stored on the phone and synced the next time the app connects.

Does Mowbius do quotes and invoices like ServiceM8?

No. Mowbius has no quoting, no invoicing, no payment processing, no accounting integration, and no GST handling. ServiceM8 does all of it, including online quote acceptance, card payments on site, and automated payment follow-ups. Mowbius covers scheduling and revenue tracking only, so you mark a job closed, tap Mark Paid, and the Revenue tab counts it. If software has to produce your tax invoices, ServiceM8 is the right category and Mowbius is not.

Is Mowbius cheaper than ServiceM8?

It depends on your job count. ServiceM8's Free plan at A$0 is cheaper than anything, but it caps at 30 new jobs a month and one user. A solo mower doing three lawns a day, five days a week, creates roughly 60 job cards a month, which clears Starter's 50-job cap and lands on the Growing plan at A$79 a month. Mowbius is $12.99 a month or $59.99 a year for unlimited jobs and unlimited contacts, so the gap widens the busier the season gets.

Which is better for a solo mower in Australia?

ServiceM8 is better if you quote, invoice, and take card payments through software, work from an iPhone, and want automated customer messaging like booking confirmations and on-the-way texts. Mowbius is better if you already bill somewhere else, work from an Android or an iPhone without caring which, and want a flat price with no job counter, no per-message credits, and nothing to configure before the first mow.
