The Cheaper Housecall Pro Alternative for Solo Lawn Care Pros

What Housecall Pro Is, and Who It’s Really For
Housecall Pro is a broad home-services platform: scheduling, a dispatch board, estimates, invoicing, card payments, online booking, automated customer reminders, a price book, marketing tools, and consumer financing. It serves HVAC, plumbing, cleaning, electrical, and lawn care under one product, which is both its strength and the reason it may not fit you.
The product is designed around a job moving between people. You take the call, someone gets dispatched, the technician’s location is tracked, the customer gets a text, the invoice goes out, the payment is processed, and the numbers land in QuickBooks. That flow is worth real money to a growing team. Run through it as one person, and most of the steps are you handing work to yourself.
Its own tier structure shows who it is built for. The single-user Basic plan is deliberately the thin one; everything that makes the platform feel complete sits on plans that include five or eight users.
Housecall Pro’s Pricing in 2026, Fully Broken Down
Verified in August 2026 on Housecall Pro’s own pricing page. Third-party guides still quote older figures such as $49 and $129, so treat the vendor page as final.
- Basic, $59/month billed annually or $79 billed monthly. One user included. Scheduling, dispatch, estimates, invoicing, online booking, and the mobile app.
- Essentials, $149/month billed annually or $189 billed monthly. Five users included, additional users listed at $100/month each.
- Max, $299/month billed annually or $329 billed monthly. Eight users included, additional users listed at $75/month each.
- Trial. 14 days, no credit card required. There is no free plan.
What the Basic plan leaves out is the part worth reading twice. Per the pricing page, Basic does not include route optimization, employee GPS tracking, flat-rate pricing, checklist automations, photo reports with annotations, commissions, recurring service plans, QuickBooks Online sync, the sales proposal tool, open API access, or a dedicated onboarding specialist. Several of those are ordinary needs for a one-person route, and the cheapest plan that has them costs $149 a month annually, four times Basic, for four user seats you will never fill.
Add-ons sit on top of all of this. Housecall Pro lists Voice, Campaigns, Pipeline, Payroll, Accounting, Tap to Pay, Websites, vehicle GPS, and an AI receptionist as separate purchases, with prices mostly quoted by sales rather than published. Card processing fees are separate again.
Where Housecall Pro Frustrates Solo Operators
These are recurring themes in public reviews and third-party pricing guides, not our findings:
- The headline price and the real bill are different numbers. Reviewers repeatedly report that SMS, integrations, and other add-ons push actual monthly spend well past $200, and pricing guides note that most businesses land on Essentials rather than the advertised entry tier before the software does what they expected.
- Limited customization. Reviewers cite the absence of custom fields and limited ability to shape the software around a workflow that isn’t the standard dispatch flow.
- Cancellation friction. Difficulty canceling is a cited complaint, and Housecall Pro’s own help center confirms the shape of it: cancellation is not self-service, and the billing team has to reach the account owner by phone before it is processed.
- Per-user charges. On plans above Basic, extra seats are billed monthly per person, which is fine for a crew and irrelevant to a solo who is paying for four empty seats anyway.
None of these make Housecall Pro a bad product. They are the specific frictions that show up when one person on a phone buys a platform designed for a dispatcher and a field team.
What Housecall Pro Does Better Than Mowbius
Being honest about this is the point of the page. Housecall Pro does all of the following, and Mowbius does none of it:
- Estimates, invoicing, and card payment processing
- Online booking and a customer-facing portal
- Automated customer reminders and confirmations by text and email
- Consumer financing offers at the point of sale
- Dispatch, crew scheduling, GPS tracking, and route optimization
- QuickBooks Online sync and open API access
- A full web app for desktop work
- CSV import and export of your customers and jobs
If you invoice through software, take cards, or have anyone working for you, that list settles it. Housecall Pro, or something in its category, is what you need.
Where Mowbius Wins
Mowbius does a much smaller job, for one kind of person: a solo operator running the whole business from a phone.
- Price. $12.99 per month or $59.99 per year, against $59 a month at Housecall Pro’s cheapest annual rate. A year of Mowbius costs less than one month of Basic.
- No add-ons and no seats. One subscription, every feature. There is nothing to upgrade to, no per-user line, no sales call to find out what something costs.
- Fully offline. Your contacts, properties, jobs, and schedule live on the phone, and you can create and change any of them with no signal at all; the app syncs the next time it connects. Housecall Pro’s mobile app stores previously opened jobs so you can read them offline, but its own mobile FAQ says editing without cell service or WiFi is not supported.
- Built for one. Contacts with color labels, jobs built from a reusable task and price catalog, “Automatically Reschedule Jobs” per contact for recurring visits, and a Schedule tab with calendar, “Daily View”, and “Weekly View”. Nothing to dispatch, nobody to assign.
- Revenue you can read in a second. The Revenue tab shows “Today’s Revenue”, “Unpaid Payments”, and “View All Payments”, with daily bar charts and a “Forecast” report. Payment tracking is manual: you “Mark Paid” on a closed job.
- No ads and no contract. Billing runs through the App Store or Google Play, and you cancel in your store settings without emailing anyone or taking a phone call.
How to Switch
Export first, cancel second. Housecall Pro admins can export the customer and job lists as CSV from the Customers and Jobs screens, and the file arrives by email. Do that while your account is still active, because cancellation is not instant and you want your history in hand regardless of where you go next. The full cancellation path, including the phone call Housecall Pro requires, is in how to cancel Housecall Pro.
Mowbius cannot import that CSV. There is no import of any kind, so setting up means entering your customers and their properties by hand. For a typical solo route that is an afternoon. Add each contact, create the property, set the recurring job once, and per-contact auto-rescheduling keeps the calendar filled after that.
The trial is 14 days and includes every feature, so you can put a few real days of your route through it before you decide. If invoicing is the thing keeping you on a paid platform, look at Yardbook’s free plan before you look at Mowbius, and there is a comparison of every major lawn care app if you want the whole field.
